Bhavnagar sits on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, a city of around 700,000 people that is simultaneously one of Gujarat's most historically significant cities and one of its most economically stratified. If you want to understand why AFJS Trust exists, you have to understand Bhavnagar.

A City of Contrasts The old city has magnificent architecture: palaces, wide promenades, a former princely grandeur that still shows in the old market squares and carved havelis. The port area was once the centre of Alang, one of the world's largest ship-breaking yards, which employed tens of thousands of men in brutal, hazardous work for decades.

Today, Bhavnagar is growing as a commercial and educational hub. New engineering colleges and schools have expanded rapidly. The middle class has grown. The city is changing.

And in the lanes behind the main roads, in communities that don't make it onto tourist maps or appear in the promotional literature of the Gujarat government's development narrative, families have been left behind.

Who Lives in the Communities We Serve The families AFJS Trust supports are not a homogeneous group. They include:

• Former daily-wage labourers from the ship-breaking industry, many of whom carry occupational illnesses and injuries
• Families who migrated from rural Saurashtra and Kutch seeking work in Bhavnagar's informal economy, and found only precarious employment in construction and domestic service
• Single-parent households, frequently headed by women who earn between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 per month doing domestic work, managing three or four children on an income that barely covers rent and food
• Families with disabled members, whose care absorbs most available resources, leaving nothing for school fees or books
• Muslim, Dalit, and adivasi communities who face compounding layers of economic and social marginalisation

The one thing these families have in common is that the formal systems, including government welfare programmes, school fee waivers, and health schemes, exist on paper but are practically inaccessible to them. The paperwork is too complex. The offices are too far. The officials too difficult to reach.

This is the gap that AFJS Trust fills.

The School We Work With Our primary education partner is St. Xavier's Primary School in Devbagh, Bhavnagar. It is one of the most respected schools in the city, one that produces children who go on to become engineers, doctors, and business owners.

It is not a school for the poor. It is a school that happens to charge fees that most of the families we support cannot afford. Our job is to bridge that gap and get children from the lanes of Bhavnagar into classrooms that genuinely serve their potential.

What We See When We Get It Right When a child from a daily-wage family walks into St. Xavier's with a new uniform, a full bag, and a paid fee receipt, something shifts, not just for the child but for the family. Parents who never dared imagine their child finishing primary school start asking about secondary schools. Siblings begin asking why they can't go too.

Education is contagious. That's not a slogan. It's what we observe, year after year, in Bhavnagar's underserved communities.

Why Bhavnagar, and Not Somewhere Else? We work in Bhavnagar because it is where John Dsouza grew up. He knows these lanes. He knows these families by name. He understands the local power structures, the community dynamics, the religious and caste sensitivities that determine whether a family will trust an outside organisation.

Relationships built over years of community presence are worth more than the most sophisticated intervention parachuted in from outside. We are not outsiders. We are from here.

The NGO Landscape in Bhavnagar There are organisations working in Bhavnagar, including government schemes, larger state-level NGOs, and international development programmes. We are not competing with them. We are filling the gaps they leave.

AFJS Trust is particularly focused on the last mile: the families that even well-intentioned programmes cannot reach because they lack documentation, because they don't speak the right language, because they don't know the right people.
