Why Education Is the Only Thing That Permanently Breaks the Poverty Cycle

We are sometimes asked: why focus on education? Why not healthcare, or housing, or direct cash transfers?

The answer is not that these things don't matter. They do. The answer is that education is the only intervention with a permanent, compounding effect on poverty.

The Compound Interest of Education Every other social intervention has to be repeated. A meal feeds a child for a day. A healthcare visit cures an illness for a season. A cash transfer sustains a family for a month.

Education accumulates. Every year of quality education a child receives adds to a permanent store of capacity: knowledge, reasoning, confidence, and credentials that compound over a lifetime.

A child who completes secondary education earns, on average, 50% more than a child who dropped out in primary school. Their children are more likely to attend school. Their grandchildren are more likely still. The break in the poverty cycle is genuine and intergenerational.

Why Quality Matters Not all education is equal. A child who attends school but sits in an overcrowded classroom with an absent teacher does not gain the same returns as a child in a well-resourced environment with engaged instruction.
