The School Dropout Crisis in Rural India: How We're Fighting It

India has made remarkable progress in school enrolment over the past two decades. But enrolment is not the same as completion. Millions of children who begin school never finish it.

The Numbers Studies suggest that while primary school enrolment in India is close to universal, dropout rates spike sharply between grades 5 and 8. In rural and semi-urban areas, many children exit the school system long before they acquire functional literacy or numeracy.

The Reasons Children Drop Out The causes of dropout are rarely simple. They include: - Economic pressure: children are needed to contribute to family income - Distance and safety: long distances to school, especially for girls, create real barriers - Low perceived return: families who have never seen education pay off struggle to invest in it - Classroom quality: overcrowded, under-resourced classrooms fail to engage children - Social factors: caste discrimination, early marriage, and peer pressure

There is no homework help at home, no older sibling who navigated the school system, no parent who can explain what the textbook says. This invisible disadvantage compounds over time.
