Section 80G Tax Exemption: Save Tax While Changing Lives

February 20, 2026·6 min read·By John Dsouza

Every year, thousands of Indian taxpayers miss out on one of the simplest, most impactful deductions available to them: Section 80G. If you donate to a registered NGO like AFJS Charitable Trust, the government rewards you for it by reducing your taxable income.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is Section 80G of the Income Tax Act? Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961, allows individuals and companies to claim a deduction on donations made to approved charitable organisations. Depending on the category of the recipient institution, you can deduct 50% or 100% of the donated amount from your taxable income.

AFJS Charitable Trust falls under the category that qualifies for a 50% deduction, meaning half of whatever you donate can be subtracted from your gross total income before tax is calculated.

How Much Can You Actually Save? Let's make this concrete. Suppose you are in the 30% income tax bracket and you donate ₹10,000 to AFJS Trust.

  • Deductible amount (50% of ₹10,000): ₹5,000
  • Tax saved at 30%: ₹1,500
  • Net cost of your ₹10,000 donation: ₹8,500

If you donate ₹25,000 (enough to sponsor one child's full year of education): - Deductible amount: ₹12,500 - Tax saved at 30%: ₹3,750 - Net cost: ₹21,250

The more you give, the more significant the tax benefit becomes. And the child you're supporting doesn't care about the tax maths. They just get to go to school.

AFJS Charitable Trust's Registration Details To be eligible for 80G deductions, the organisation you donate to must be registered with the Income Tax Department. AFJS Charitable Trust is fully registered:

  • Darpan Registration: GJ/2025/0719739
  • PAN: AALTA7481L
  • Trust Registration Act: F/3788/Bhavnagar
  • Registered under: The Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950

Our PAN number (AALTA7481L) is what you will need when filing your Income Tax Return (ITR). Please keep your donation receipt safely, as it will have this number printed on it.

How to Claim Your 80G Deduction: Step by Step 1. Donate via Razorpay at joyfullsmiles.org/donate, or via UPI (63573690174@sbi), or direct bank transfer 2. Request your receipt: Contact us at Afjs.charitable@gmail.com or WhatsApp +91 63573 69174 with your name, PAN, address, and donation amount 3. Receive your 80G receipt: We issue an official donation receipt with our PAN, Trust Registration, and all required details 4. File your ITR: In your Income Tax Return, declare the donation under "Deductions: Chapter VI-A, Section 80G" 5. Keep the receipt for 6 years: The Income Tax Department may request documentation during assessment

What Documents You Need - Your PAN card (the deduction cannot be claimed without a PAN) - The donation receipt from AFJS Trust (we provide this) - Bank statement confirming the transfer (for large donations)

Note: Section 80G deductions cannot be claimed for donations made in cash exceeding ₹2,000. Online payments, cheques, and UPI are all fully eligible.

Can NRIs Claim 80G? NRIs can donate to AFJS Trust, and the donation is certainly used fully for our programmes. However, 80G deductions under the Indian Income Tax Act apply to Indian taxable income. If you are an NRI with taxable income in India, you may be able to claim the deduction. Please consult your CA or tax advisor.

For NRIs without Indian taxable income, the donation is still fully impactful. You simply won't have an Indian tax benefit to claim. Many of our international donors give without the tax advantage and find the impact more than sufficient motivation.

Why This Matters for AFJS Trust Every rupee we receive goes toward children's education, nutrition, and welfare. The 80G benefit means your government is effectively co-sponsoring the impact. You give ₹25,000, the government refunds up to ₹3,750 in reduced tax, and a child gets a full year of school.

This is the most efficient philanthropy available to Indian taxpayers. You would be surprised how few people use it.
